At least 50 people including an assistant proctor, students and policemen were injured in a clash between students and outsiders over cutting of a cake marking the birth anniversary of Bangabandhu at Bangladesh Agricultural University last night.
Injured Assistant Proctor Alamgir Hossain and a student were treated at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital while others received treatment at BAU health centre.
According to sources, a group of outsiders aided by shopkeepers of KR Market at BAU campus wanted to organise a programme to celebrate Bangabandhu’s birthday without prior permission of the university authorities.
As the assistant proctor protested, they attacked on him, his driver, a number of security guards and some students present on the spot around 9:00pm yesterday. Later, the students rushed to the spot and ransacked several shops of the market. The agitated students also set some shops ablaze.
