Five Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) militants were awarded 14 years’ rigorous imprisonment (RI) in a case under Explosive Substances Act in Kishoreganj while 25 JMB militants including three capital punishment awardees were produced before four courts in Mymensingh yesterday.
SM Abdus Salam, additional district and sessions judge of Kishoreganj Special Tribunal-2, handed down the verdict, reports a correspondent from Kishoreganj.
The convicts are Shafiqul Islam, 24, son of Azizul Huq of Jamur village in Sherpur upazila, Dwin Islam, son of Ramzan Ali, Harun, 29, son of late Siraj Mia, Md Abdul Hannan, 26, son of late Abdul Hakim and Hussain, son of Jangu Mia of Hilchia Satuta village in Bazitpur upazila.
All of them are in Kishoreganj jail.
According to the prosecution, a team from Bhairab camp of Rapid Action Battalion raided Satuta village on July 17, 2007 and arrested Dwin Islam, Harun, Hannan and Hussain along with 15 home-made grenades and six packets of power gel.
Rab later arrested Shafiqul, the regional commander of JMB in Mymensingh.
ASI Mozammel Huq of Rab lodged a case under Explosive Substances Act with Bajitpur Police Station on July 18.
Our Mymensingh Correspondent reports: Capital punishment awardees — Salahuddin Salehin, Asaduzzaman Ponir and Rakib Hasan — and executed JMB leader Bangla Bhai’s wife Fahima Akhtar were among the 25 militants produced before four courts in Mymensingh yesterday.
They were produced before the courts for hearing and taking deposition of witnesses in 14 separate cases including series bomb blasts in Mymensingh.
The 25 JMB men were produced before the courts of Begum Shamim Ahmed, Md Sharif Uddin, Md Dalil Uddin and Md Habiullah, the judges of Additional District and Session Judge’s courts No 1, 2, 4 and Cognizance Court No-1 respectively.
Hearing and taking deposition of witnesses were held in 14 cases, court sources said. Later, the courts ordered sending the accused to jail.
